A true Mala Bead necklace will be made up of 108 beads plus one head bead which is generally attached to a tassel and slightly larger than the rest. 108 is a sacred number in many ways, a few reasons being: there are 108 sacred sites in India, 108 sacred texts and 108 marma points in the body. The beads used can range in material from Ebony, Teak, Rosewood and crystal beads just to name a few. The head bead, or Guru bead, represents the beginning and end of your meditation and or prayers.
Traditionally Mala Beads are used for Japa meditation, a technique that comes from the practice of Yoga. Starting with a Mantra, a sacred sound you begin on the first bead beside the head bead. Say the Mantra out loud and then move to the next bead holding the Mala Beads with your thumb and middle finger. Repeat the same mantra on each bead. Once you have made it around to the other side of the head bead you move in the opposite direction, never crossing over the head bead. As you move along, become aware that you are pulling the beads towards you, not pushing away.
This meditation technique is great for people who find sitting still and in silence difficult. With Japa Meditation you can focus your mind on transcendental sound and have a physical movement which prevents unnecessary fidgeting. This can be done seated in a quiet place but Japa is a useful meditation for a busy life. Keep your Malas in your car and use them if you have to wait before work, take them to the beach and enjoy a nice Japa walk or practice Japa in the long wait at the doctors. When you are not using your Malas be sure to keep them off the floor. You can wear them, place them on an altar or other sacred space or keep them where you do most of your meditation.
For a more general use you can hold them while setting intentions for the day, saying other prayers or wear them while journaling and reflecting. When choosing your Mala take note of what the beads are made of as the properties will affect the benefits you receive. Most beads or seeds used for Malas are protective but when mixed with gemstones they can enhance and alter the feeling and intention for the practice.
Following your intuition is always the most important thing when choosing and using your Malas.
